Unmasking the Myth: Finding True Freedom in the Present Moment

In his timeless teachings, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche reminds us that our search for freedom is often a paradox—a myth we construct to avoid the very reality we inhabit. As he so pointedly observes, the path of meditation is not about escaping our current existence, but about waking up to it, even in its most challenging forms. At the heart of this journey lies the challenge of 'The Myth of Freedom,' a concept that suggests we are often trapped by the very structures we create to feel secure. Whether we are navigating the 'styles of imprisonment'—the self-absorption, passion, or subtle forms of aggression we carry throughout the day—we are often caught in a dance of fantasy versus reality. Trungpa Rinpoche’s insights, distilled from his seminal talks on the Buddhist path, offer a radical invitation: to stop running and start sitting. When we practice sitting meditation, we aren't just sitting still; we are practicing simplicity. We are learning to work with the emotions that arise, not as obstacles to be conquered, but as waves to be understood. It is a transition from the narrow confines of ego to the expansive territory of mindfulness and awareness. Bringing this ancient wisdom into the modern workspace, home, or community is an act of courage. It asks us to bring a 'lion’s roar' of clarity to our daily interactions, turning the mundane aspects of work and relationships into 'meditation in action.' It is about finding that spark of awareness in the middle of a busy afternoon or a difficult conversation. We don’t need to reach a distant, idealized state of peace. Instead, we can find a 'cool boredom' in the present moment, stripping away the layers of expectation to find the raw, beautiful, and sometimes messy truth of our lives. As you move through your week, I invite you to pause and consider: where are you currently building a myth to avoid the reality of your experience? Tomorrow morning, or perhaps tonight, try to sit for just a few moments of complete, unadorned simplicity. Do not try to fix anything, change anything, or achieve anything. Simply exist with the breath as it is, and notice the freedom that arises when you stop trying to be free.
