Beyond the Myth: Finding Freedom in the Present Moment

As Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche once shared through his teachings on the path of meditation, our search for freedom is often a myth—a self-constructed journey that keeps us trapped in our own expectations. In his classic work, The Myth of Freedom and the Way of Meditation, he invites us to look closely at our experiences, from the mundane to the overwhelming, to find a more authentic path. One of the most profound themes within his teachings is the practice of 'simplicity'—a radical way of being that asks us to step away from the noise of our egos and return to the breath. In the rush of our modern lives, we are constantly bombarded by distractions, chasing the next accomplishment or avoiding the next frustration. We often treat our meditation practice like a project to be completed, forgetting that the heart of the path is found in the simple, unadorned experience of sitting. When we cultivate mindfulness and awareness, we aren't trying to achieve a higher state of being; we are simply learning to show up for the reality of our own lives. This 'simplicity' is not about emptiness or lack of ambition, but about the profound clarity that arises when we stop fighting our present circumstances. Whether we are dealing with intense emotions or the subtle boredom of a routine day, the teachings remind us that we can work with these states rather than running from them. By bringing this awareness into our daily work, our relationships, and our quiet moments, we transform the 'myth' of freedom into a lived reality. Freedom is not an escape from our emotions or our 'styles of imprisonment'; it is the courageous choice to be fully present with whatever arises. This week, I invite you to join us in this contemplative practice. Find a quiet corner, sit for a few minutes, and instead of chasing a specific feeling of peace, simply allow yourself to be exactly where you are. Notice the flicker of your thoughts, the rise and fall of your breath, and the vastness of the space around you. Can you find a moment of simplicity in the midst of your busy day? Let us breathe into this invitation together, letting go of the myth and embracing the path as it unfolds, step by step, breath by breath.
