The Sacredness of the Everyday: Finding Reality in Work, Sex, and Money

To cope with the anxieties and challenges of modern life, what we need is not temporary escape, because eventually we find ourselves back in the real world. Instead, the best prescription is a dose of reality and a dose of respect for ourselves and our world.

Often, we approach our daily lives—our jobs, our relationships, and our financial concerns—as hurdles to overcome or obstacles to our spiritual peace. We tend to view the 'real' practice as something that happens solely on the meditation cushion, leaving the messiness of our professional and personal lives outside the door. Yet, the teachings of Chögyam Trungpa invite us to consider a more expansive perspective: that there is a profound sacredness to be found in the ordinary.

Work, sex, and money are not distractions from the path; they are the path. When we look closely at how we interact with our career, how we navigate our sexual energy and relationships, and how we relate to the flow of finances, we find an opportunity to practice mindfulness in action.

Consider our work life. It is easy to view a career as merely a means to an end, but in the light of contemplative wisdom, every task becomes a potential expression of simplicity and wakefulness. Whether we are sending an email or navigating a complex project, the smallest action can either be a source of chaos or an act of presence. By applying meditative awareness to these everyday activities, we transform the mundane into a practice of discipline and dignity. We are not just 'getting things done'; we are cultivating a way of being that honors the reality of the present moment.

This approach shifts the way we relate to the modern world. Today, mindfulness is often treated as a tool for stress reduction or performance optimization—a narrow application that, while helpful, misses the vastness of the tradition. The 'big view' offered here is not about adding another task to our to-do list, but about changing our relationship to life itself. It is an invitation to engage with our experiences—even the difficult ones—without the need to flee into temporary comforts or escapist fantasies.

As you move through your day today, I invite you to take a brief pause. Before your next meeting, or as you handle your finances, stop for just a moment and breathe. Acknowledge that the activity before you is not a hurdle, but a sacred space for your practice. Can you bring a sense of curiosity to how you move through these 'ordinary' tasks? Notice the energy you bring to your actions and see if you can hold them with just a little more grace, a little more humor, and a little more presence.
