The Spacious Path: Finding Freedom in the Myth

Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche once noted that the path of meditation offers us a vivid snapshot of our own journey, a way to move beyond the stories we construct about ourselves. In his classic work, The Myth of Freedom, we are invited to look closer at the ways we define our own liberation. Often, we chase a version of freedom that is little more than a fantasy—a life without disappointment, struggle, or the complexities of the human heart. Yet, true insight arises not when we escape our reality, but when we finally sit down with it. One of the most transformative themes in this collection of talks is the concept of 'cool boredom.' While we often run from the quiet spaces of our lives, seeking constant stimulation or emotional fireworks, there is a profound, grounding intelligence in simply being present. When we stop trying to fix our boredom or suppress our suffering, we begin to uncover a genuine, unadorned simplicity. In the busyness of modern life—the endless pings, the work demands, and the digital noise—this practice feels radical. To embrace the 'myth' of freedom is to realize that we are often our own jailers, creating 'styles of imprisonment' out of our self-absorption, our anger, or our frantic need for validation. Meditation acts as a gentle mirror, reflecting these tendencies without judgment. By bringing mindfulness and awareness to our daily habits—whether we are at work, in conversation, or just sitting in silence—we shift our relationship with our own minds. We move from a place of constant reaction to a place of spacious, intentional action. It is in these ordinary moments that the path truly reveals itself. We do not need to become someone else or reach a distant, glowing goal; we simply need to show up for the life we are already living. As you move through your day, I invite you to find one moment of stillness. When you feel that familiar itch to be somewhere else, or the urge to label your experience as 'bad' or 'boring,' pause. Take a single, conscious breath. Let the 'myth' of how things should be fall away, and rest, just for a moment, in the raw, honest beauty of what is actually happening right now.
